Thanks for the encouragement! Fun fact: the robot is actually going just about as slow as I could get it to go... the stock ESC engages as "fast" and goes up to "really fast" :)
I just put a new Traxxas XL-5 ESC on it. The XL-5 engages at "really slow" :) Also it has a proportional brake, something that will be quite useful once the robot can actually detect obstacles by some means other than crashing into them. :)
